About Dr. Duan

Zea Psychiatry -- Our Story
Zea Psychiatry's name was inspired by zea mays (pronounced zey-ah), the Latin scientific name for maize. Maize was domesticated by indigenous peoples in southern Mexico over 9,000 years ago and has become an staple food in many parts of the world. For the Mayan and Aztec people, maize was a sacred food that played an essential role in their identity and mythology. This included stories of maize gods and goddesses, and the creation of man and celestial bodies from maize. In North America, maize is often referred to as corn. Many indigenous agricultural tribes in North America feature the Corn Mother in their myths. For the Greeks, this cereal grain was a crucial part of ancient diets and has ties to the etymology of the word “ζείδωρος” (“zeidoros”), meaning “life-giving”.
